Located in the heart of Edinburgh at 22 Rodney Street, Seventy One Steps is a delightful café that brings a fresh take on the classic bagel experience. With its warm and inviting atmosphere, this cozy café is a perfect stop for breakfast, lunch, or a sweet treat during your afternoon stroll. Its proximity to the Botanical Gardens makes it an ideal pitstop for visitors exploring the city's attractions.

Seventy One Steps specializes in a range of bagels crafted with care and featuring a tantalizing array of fillings. Notable menu items include "The Smash," an avocado-based delight that brings a burst of flavor to your palate, and the "Classic" bagel topped with exquisite smoked salmon, which has garnered rave reviews from customers. One visitor, Collin A, states, "Absolutely delicious! Can’t go wrong with the classic with smoked salmon. Staff is nice and helpful." The menu also offers unique variations like the mouthwatering "Reuben," packed with pastrami and accompanied by a robust mustard that adds a zesty kick. Another reviewer, Alice La Vecchia, eloquently captures the charm of their offerings, saying, "The Rueben was delectable... Even just the pastrami itself was wonderful."

Despite the slightly higher price point—£14 for the Classic bagel—many patrons agree that the quality is worth it. Nuala Rooney highlights one of her experiences, stating, "The sharp red onion and pickles cut through the rich, fatty cream cheese and salmon perfectly. A delicious combination!" Each ingredient is thoughtfully chosen, and the care taken in preparation is evident in every bite. Additionally, for those with a sweet tooth, the café offers house-made donuts and cakes, making it a delightful spot to indulge your cravings.

The café's atmosphere is described as quaint and soothing, perfect for retreating from a rainy day in Edinburgh, as noted by Olivia Roman, who appreciated the "nice and cosy" environment and friendly staff. Although seating can be limited, the welcoming energy and commitment to customer service make each visit a memorable one.

If you're a bagel aficionado seeking to discover some of the finest flavors in Edinburgh, or simply looking for a cozy café to unwind, Seventy One Steps is well worth the visit. Grab a bagel, enjoy a cup of coffee, and soak in the charming Edinburgh ambiance.

Rainy day in Edinburgh. Passed by and decided to go in for lunch. They don't have many places to sit but the ambience was nice and cosy. Staff was friendly and keeper checkin in. Only ordered the smash but they also offer donuts and cakes made in house. Highly recommend, especially if you are going to visit the botanical gardens since it is really close by.

Really great bagels although a bit pricey. The salad on the side was also a bit of a star! We got the Rueben and an avocado smash with feta. The rueben was delectable and the mustard really pulled through. Even just the pastrami itself was wonderful. Will definitely be back to try the sweet bagels!

I got the classic bagel and it was absolutely lovely. The sharp red onion and pickles cut through the rich, fatty cream cheese and salmon perfectly. A delicious combination! The price of the bagel was STEEP at £14 which I think is borderline ridiculous but it seems like a small establishment and everything is made on site which I appreciate takes a lot of time and effort. I also got a raspberry jam donut which was probably the best donut I’ve ever had. It had a perfect light, airy, soft and squidgy texture filled with a delicious jam which wasn’t too sweet. If you don’t want to pay for a bagel I would certainly recommend you at least try a donut.

I've always liked The Bearded Baker. Whenever we head up to Edinburgh, we go straight there for buns and coffee, but now it was time to try 71 Steps. We arrived at 1030ish, the staff all smiled and said hello, asking if we were staying or after a takeaway. We were seated straight away (two adults, two kids and a dog) at one of the window tables. They brought us water to the table and allowed us to have a look at the menus, then came back after about two minutes for our order. My wife went for the waffles, kids both had bagels (they were being picky so one had bacon and the other just wanted butter) and I went all out with a cinnamon bun and a doughnut. We also asked for a double espresso, a black coffee and a hot chocolate. Took about five minutes for the food and drinks to come to the table. It was all fantastic. Everyone tucked into my doughnut (which I knew they would, hence the additional cinnamon bun). The doughnut was a special rhubarb and custard with a white chocolate glaze. I cannot extol enough how fabulous this doughnut was. Just amazing! The cinnamon bun was also excellent as they always are. I couldn't try my wife's waffles as I'm allergic to banana but she said they were terrific and she cleaned the plate. The kids loved their bagels too, so much that we had to get some more to take back for tea (as well as another bun and a slab of focaccia). They have done a great job getting this new place set up and feeling so friendly and welcoming. The staff were great with the kids, always with a smile on their face. Thanks so much and well done again on a great venue.

Of course I’m a bagel snob, I was born in New York. After 3+ years of living in Edinburgh I have accepted the fact that people insist on filling their bagels here with all kinds of strange things (square sausages? Haggis?), but I’ve still not managed to find a bagel sandwich where the bagel itself is actually good. Enter: Seventy One Steps. The fillings of the “ultimate beggel” were delicious. An oozy egg, perfectly cooked bacon, tattie scones (again, we are in Scotland), melted cheese, and a tangy tomato chutney. All stuffed within a soft but robust sesame bagel. Yum. The space was also beautifully appointed, the coffee was great, and service was prompt and polite. I’ll be back to try more bagels and the other delicious baked goods on offer.
